‘American Scare’ author to appear at Lewes library Nov. 4
The Lewes Public Library will host author Robert Fieseler for a discussion of his new book, “American Scare: Florida's Hidden Cold War on Black and Queer Lives,” at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, and online via Zoom.
For nearly a decade, the Florida Legislature founded, funded and supported the Johns Committee, an organization using the cover of communism to attack members of the NAACP and queer professors and students. Fieseler describes the heartbreaking ramifications for Florida citizens whose lives were imperiled, thoughtfully profiles marginalized residents and brings their experiences to light.
Fieseler will be in conversation with Ronald Collins, a legal scholar and Lewes Public Library distinguished lecturer. “Robert Fieseler uncovers a haunting story of government-sponsored bigotry,” said Collins. “With narrative flair, historical accuracy, heart-rending compassion and sober-minded scrutiny, he illuminates the evils of a dark past and points to the alarming implications of the same kind of scapegoating so pervasive in America today.”
Registration is required, and participants will be asked to select in-person or online attendance. Visit tinyurl.com/AuthorEventsLPL or call 302-645-2733 to sign up.
Fieseler is a journalist investigating marginalized groups and a scholar excavating forgotten histories. He is a National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association Journalist of the Year and recipient of the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship, and his debut book, “Tinderbox,” won seven awards, including the Edgar Award.
This event is co-sponsored by the Lewes Public Library, Browseabout Books, ACLU of Delaware, CAMP Rehoboth, Delaware Sexuality & Gender Collective, Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice and Sussex Pride.
