Effects of Animal Urine On Carpet
The problem of animal urine on carpeting besides the smell and contamination is it can cause permanent damage to the carpet fibers. Once the urine dries the ph level can be between 10 and 12 and becomes difficult to remove. The urine oxidizes and reacts with the carpet dye to create a color change. Also if the urine soaks through to the carpet padding and sub floor, the padding should be replaced and the sub floor treated and sealed. If you can catch the urine when it is fresh use a wet/dry vac or towel to soak up as much urine as possible. Mix 50% water and 50% white vinegar then pour a good amount onto the urine spot. Let it sit for a few minutes then vacuum or use a towel to extract it from the carpet. You can repeat the process if you like to make sure all the urine is out.
