Why I enjoy video games more than television and movies

In the past week, everyone online has been atwitter about the return of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Me? I can't stop thinking about how much I enjoyed Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead: The Game.

I have a Netflix subscription (well, my boyfriend does), and I sat down, three times now, and tried to watch The Walking Dead. I am sorry, but it didn’t keep my attention. I made it through all of three episodes.

A lot of people say it gets better after the first season, but 1) I don’t have time to commit to a television show right now and 2) I really don’t have the desire to continue watching that show.

Enough about The Walking Dead. The whole point of this post is to tell you why I think video games are more entertaining than television or movies. Sure, there are a lot of amazing shows and movies, but, in general, movies and television bore me. 

When I’m watching an action-packed T.V. show or movie, I’m always wanting to control the action. I’d rather control the character(s) and decide their fate than simply watch it happen. Maybe I’m a control freak?

Sometimes, I feel like as more and more people are being introduced to gaming, and as video games keep evolving to the point where most of them look like movies, that maybe, just maybe, video games will replace movies. Obviously, this isn’t going to happen. Unfortunately, not everyone plays games. However, I do feel that less people will be buying DVDs and Blu-Rays in the future than they do now. What will they be buying? Video games.

Another advantage to video games over television and movies is the replay value of games. A lot of games have an almost infinite replay value, such as Grand Theft Auto titles and Elder Scrolls games. With T.V. and movies, once it’s over, it’s over.

Don’t take this as me hating on movies and television. I love most all entertainment mediums. However, lately I feel like I am enjoying video games more than 90 percent of the movies and television shows that I watch.
