Department of Correction holds 212th academy graduation
The Delaware Department of Correction graduated and assigned 26 employees from its Correctional Employee Initial Training academy. The graduates took the oath of office and received their facility assignments before family, friends, and DOC officials.
CEIT class No. 212 comprised 22 correctional officers, one correctional trades instructor, two Department of Education teachers and one correctional counselor. The ceremony featured remarks by Department of Correction Commissioner Robert M. Coupe, training staff and Chaplain Rory Russell, and encouraging words from class speaker Correctional Officer Joshua Lawrence.
These graduates completed nine weeks of training, including hands-on and classroom sessions in a multitude of areas, including inmate supervision, weapons and chemical munitions, defensive tactics, emergency preparedness, report writing, substance abuse training, CPR/Basic First Aid and interpersonal communication.
Coupe thanked friends and relatives of the graduating class for supporting the newly graduated officers during their time in the training academy. “A life of public service presents a demanding schedule and a challenging work environment; and thus this line of work puts increased demands on the people we care about the most, our families and our friends,” Coupe said.
Coupe also provided a note of encouragement to the officers quoting the late Chaplain Oscar Frundt, who said, “Make the most of your life. Life is short; death is forever. Do the best you can in your job. Never forget where you come from, for so many people do forget where they come from. Be yourself and owe no man.”
CEIT Class 212 was led by an instructional team that consisted of primary instructor Staff Lt. Bernell Williams and Cpl. Alethia Browne.
