Gallagher headed to Dewey Beach

April 6, 2011

The eighth annual Comedy at the Beach benefit will move to a venue for a Saturday, April 9 performance by comedian Gallagher.

Gallagher’s show is truly interactive; he is infamous for using sledgehammers to smash watermelons which splatter over the front rows. He rose to fame with a series of 16 televised comedy specials on Showtime in the 1980s.

The show will take place at the Baycenter in Ruddertowne on Route 1 in Dewey Beach. Previous headliners including Joan Rivers, Weird Al Yankovic and Paula Poundstone, performed at Rehoboth’s convention center. The concerts raise money for the nonprofit, independent Jefferson School in Georgetown.

The show will go on despite the funny man’s recent health scare. He suffered his second heart attack March 11, this time on stage in Minnesota.

Gallagher was also in the news recently after a dispute with his bank over the mortgage payments on his home. After being evicted, he began selling many of the stage props from his four-decade career.

Organizers said a second beneficiary, WBOC’s Bless Our Children Campaign, will receive a portion of the funds from this year’s show.
