The Cape Henlopen boys' lacrosse team notched another Henlopen Conference Championship on their crosse with a 7-6 win over Delmar Friday, May 20, at Legends Stadium.

Delmar came out fired up and scored the first two goals in the game.

"We made mistakes early on and they took the two-goal lead," said Cape coach Mark D'Ambrogi. "We had to press a little harder. Delmar's got a lot of pride. They have improved over the last few years. We had to work harder because of how hard they were playing."

Sean Lally and Erik Stancofski scored twice while Hank Coveleski, Evan Gehman and Brock Maloomian each tallied one. Jake Brown and Luke D'Ambrogi each had two assists in the contest.

The four-time state championship head coach was quick to praise his players for their performance.

"Erik Stancofski is doing everything we ask of him," said the coach. "Evan Gehman is starting to play a complete game and he's making good decisions with and without the ball. Liam [Zolper], Sean [Lally] and Joey [Kung] are doing well at the face-off X. They are winning some good faces for us.

"Brock [Maloomian], Patrick [Monigle] and Jake [Brown] are playing hard in the midfield. Hank [Coveleski] is doing well at the X and Ethan [Ghabra] is playing well even though he's a little banged up."

The defense held the 10-4 Wildcats to one of their lowest totals of the season.

"Holden [Kammerer] is solid and Dillon [Mocci] is a scrappy. Cole [Conrad] is also playing well and Sean's [Grahne] defensive IQ has gone up a lot. Brooks [Buck] and Liam [Zolper] have done a good job on man down."

The coach also likes the work ethic of his defensive midfielder.

"Robbie Neall is playing great on ground balls, clears, and he is playing really tough defense,'" said D'Ambrogi.

Goalies Brandt Lookup and Brendan Kane had four and six saves, respectively.

"Both of our goalies have been doing a good job," said the 2006 and 2008 Coach of the Year.

Cape travels to Caesar Rodney Tuesday, May 24, for a rematch with the Riders in the opening round of the DIAA state tournament.  Cape defeated Caesar Rodney 11-9 April 27 at Camden. Cape defeated the Riders 9-8 last year in the DIAA semifinals.

"We have to play a little harder going into the playoffs," said D'Ambrogi. "We have to be ready to play when the game starts and play a complete game."
