The Sussex County Fund for Women drew nearly 100 women for Fashion, Fun, and Philanthropy at the Dewey Beach Lions Club April 30. During the event, seven new founders joined the Fund for Women: Nancy Bellinger, April Clyde, Sheila Inden, Janet Lenz, LeeAnn Nelson, Mary Ann Ronald, and Deb Schiffer. Becoming a founder requires a pledge of $1,000 to be fulfilled within five years.
Guests watched Fund for Women founders and recipients model spring fashions from Rehoboth Beach women’s boutiques including Anything Goes, Crysti, and White House-Black Market. Make-up and hair styles were donated by Bad Hair Day. Store owners donated raffle items for the event. Models were Prue Albright, Benedette Cooper, Susan Daily, Ginny Daly, Jeanne Gilligan, Kathy Jankowski, Kathy Kiernan, Lee Wheeler and Jo Wilkins.
After guests enjoyed a light lunch, beverages and desserts prepared by members, Sussex Founder and Chairwoman Lynn Kokjohn explained how the Fund for Women organization lends a hand to Delaware women and girls through grants. Grant recipient Charlene Phillips of Habitat for Humanity underscored how a Fund for Women grant assisted her organization in creating homes for local women. Letters of appreciation from recent recipients were shared by Phillips with the audience. Valery Cordrey from East Coast Garden Center donated planters to two families who recently moved into their Habitat homes.
The Fashion, Fun, and Philanthropy event was planned by Janet Davis, Denise Emery, Trena Kelly, Kathy Kiernan, Lynn Kokjohn, Suzanne Landon, Jean Lamontagene, Judy Mellen, Polly Mervine, Cheryl Mitchell and Carolyn Strum.
Some of the services the Fund for Women grants provide are prenatal care, housing, abuse counseling, legal assistance, medical care, scholarship programs, and job training. The endowment fund is at the Delaware Community Foundation, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. The fund awarded $130,000 to 13 nonprofit organizations as a result of the endowment earnings this past year.
