Stonewall Democrats to honor transgender heroine June 17

Barbara Gittings Delaware Stonewall Democrats will be honoring Sarah McBride, the first transgender individual to speak at a national political party convention, at its annual summer reception Saturday, June 17, between 2 and 4 p.m., at Mariachi's Restaurant, 14 Wilmington Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.

McBride, a Wilmington native and current press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign, made headlines when in 2012 she came out as transgender while serving as student body president at American University in Washington, D.C. She is being honored for having helped lead a successful effort in Delaware to add gender identity and expression to the state's nondiscrimination and hate crimes laws.

Barbara Gittings Delaware Stonewall Democrats was established in 2003 to secure for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people the equal rights guaranteed for all citizens. Since its inception it has secured nondiscrimination language in human rights statutes and seen passage of marriage equality. Funds raised from the summer event will support candidates up and down Delaware who demonstrate a commitment to securing these rights and, to continue implementing the mission of BGDSD.

BGDSD is honored to note that almost all of Delaware's statewide and national elected Democrats have shown up at this event since its inception.
