Harriott and Schulze join Orthopaedic Associates of Southern Delaware

June 26, 2017

Orthopaedic Associates of Southern Delaware has welcomed Dr. Paul Harriott and Dr. Scott Schulze to its growing Lewes-based orthopaedic practice. With the addition of Harriott and Schulze, the group now boasts an 11-physician, multi-specialty practice.

"I am excited about our practice's continued growth as we continue to welcome new physicians to our team," said Dr. Gita Pillai, president. "Our multi-specialty practice is committed to providing the best orthopaedic care to the families of Lewes, the surrounding communities, as well as our year-round visitors. Dr. Schulze and Dr. Harriott bring 26 years of experience practicing medicine independently in Sussex County."

Harriott has been practicing in Lewes since 2001. He has fellowship training in sports medicine, and arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery. This includes shoulder rotator cuff surgery, shoulder instability surgery, knee ACL reconstruction, and meniscus and cartilage surgeries. He also performs joint replacement surgery and general orthopaedic surgery.

His career, however, started somewhat differently. His undergraduate degree was in mechanical engineering from Cornell University. He also earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering and then an MBA. After graduation, he worked for Perkin-Elmer on the Hubble Space Telescope, and later for Hewlett-Packard designing medical ultrasound devices. This sparked his interest in medicine. He attended Harvard Medical School, followed by a residency in orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University. His sports medicine fellowship was at Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania, where he assisted in the care of professional athletes with the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Flyers, Philadelphia Kixx, Camden River Sharks baseball team and the Rowan University football team.

His free time, though limited, is spent restoring sports and classic cars, and occasionally driving them on the track. He also enjoys windsurfing on the bay, cooking, and gardening.

Schulze is a board-certified, fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon, specializing in diseases and injury from the fingertips to the elbow. He graduated from Rider University in New Jersey with a biology degree and psychology minor. He attended Ross University School of Medicine and became interested in multiple subspecialties of surgery in his third and fourth years as a student on the service of Dr. Stanley Dudrick. Schulze is the only fellowship hand and upper extremity surgeon offering wrist replacement surgery on the Eastern Shore. He specializes in treatment of nerve compression and injuries of the peripheral nerves and tendons, management of arthritis, fracture, tendinopathies, sports-related injuries and all facets of upper extremity pathology.

Schulze completed his general surgery residency at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. During his residency, he served on many services including Trauma, Burn, Pediatric Surgery and Orthopedics, among others. He ultimately served as chief resident in his fifth year of training.

Following residency, Schulze pursued specialty training as a burn fellow at Southern Illinois University under Dr. Bradon Wilhelmi and Dr. Michael Neumeister. He followed his burn fellowship with a hand and microvascular fellowship under Dr. Michael Neumeister, Dr. Robert Russel, Dr. Elvin Zook and others at the same institution.

Schulze has authored multiple textbook chapters and peer-reviewed articles in the fields of general surgery, hand surgery and microvascular reconstruction. Schulze is considered an expert in his field and has presented research at regional, national and international meetings. He has served as faculty instructor for the management of Dupuytren's Disease, burns and compression neuropathies.
