Johnson Orthodontics donates lifesaving devices to local schools

March 25, 2018

Local orthodontist Dr. Jonathan Johnson has donated LifeVac anti-choking devices to all eight Cape district schools and Sussex Academy.

The LifeVac is a non-powered, non-invasive portable suction device that resembles a small plunger. It is placed directly over a choking victim's mouth to help dislodge whatever object is blocking their airway.

Its suction pressure is three times greater than the highest recorded abdominal thrusts and can help save a child's life when the Heimlich maneuver has been attempted unsuccessfully.

Johnson hopes the schools will never have to actually put these devices to use, but he believes in the importance of being prepared in case of a choking emergency.
