Griffin Kammerer of Rehoboth awarded Fulbright Fellowship

October 8, 2018

Griffin Kammerer of Rehoboth Beach recently received a Fulbright Fellowship to study and teach in Malaysia. A recent graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, Kammerer was among the 700 graduating college seniors worldwide who each year receive this prestigious honor. “The fellowship gives me the opportunity to combine a love of travel and helping others,” said Kammerer, who majored in both economics and psychology.

Kammerer is a graduate of Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes, where he was a two sport All-State athlete, editor of the school newspaper, a member of the National Honor Society and the robotics team, and earned WBOC scholar-athlete recognition. At Swarthmore, he was a pitcher on the baseball team and a member of the Academic All-Conference team as well as hosting his own radio show and being employed as a writing associate.

Kammerer has worked at SoDel Concepts during summers, both in the hospitality company’s restaurants and in the main office in downtown Rehoboth Beach. “We at SoDel Concepts are so proud of Griffin,” said Nelia Dolan, marketing director. “Many of us in the community have watched him grow up in the Cape schools and become an accomplished adult who has a great compassion for others, which has led to his next adventure.”

Based in the United States, the Fulbright Program offers competitive, merit-based grants for international educational exchange. The grants are available to students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists and artists. Sen. J. William Fulbright founded the program in 1946 to increase understanding between U.S. citizens and those in other countries.

An avid traveler, surfer, bodyboarder and spearfisherman, Kammerer has traveled to Australia, Tasmania, Bali, Panama, Mexico, New Zealand and Portugal. He’s also been to Nepal to visit the family of his college roommate. This is his first time in Malaysia, where he will work for 10 months. He is the son of Rehoboth Beach residents Scott and Lisa Kammerer.
