Miss Utility 8-1-1 5K set for Aug. 11

August 7, 2019

“Know what’s below! Call before you dig! Call 8-1-1.” Those are the resounding words for anyone who is considering building a structure, digging a pool or doing any other construction or excavation.

To help boost this message, Mispillion River Brewing will host the Miss Utility 8-1-1 5K at 8:11 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 11 (Yes, it is 8-1-1!). The entire family is invited to participate and learn more about the importance of calling 8-1-1. The Kiddie K starts at 8 a.m., with the 5K and one-mile fun walk beginning at, you guessed it, 8:11. Mispillion River Brewing is a member of the 2019 Craft Brewery Series.

Miss Utility is a one-call notification center that alerts subscribing underground facility owner-members of proposed excavation plans. It processes requests for Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C. Anyone, including homeowners and excavators, planning to dig or alter the surface of the ground should call. Miss Utility is a free service. A call allows ample time for markings so workers will be able to excavate safely without endangering the property and the lives of anyone working.

This 8-1-1 event will start and end at the Mispillion Brewery. The flat run/walk course is USATF-certified with race clocking by Nova Timing Systems. Advance registration entrants receive a tech shirt. Awards go to overall male and female winners, and masters male and female winners. The top three overall male and female finishers in 10-year age groups 13 and under to 70 and over receive awards, as do the top three male and female walkers. The largest team wins the Miss Utility Cup and gift card. There will be a fun post-race party, and beer is available to those 21 and over.

Preregistration for the run and walk is $18.11 until Friday, Aug. 9, and $25 afterward. There is no charge for the Kiddie K. On the day of the event, registration will begin at 7 a.m. Go to www.races2run.com/beach-races-2 to register and for more information.

Sponsors are Miss Utility of Delmarva, Mispillion River Brewing, High Five Hospitality Group, One Call Concepts, Chesapeake Utilities, Tidewater Utilities, and Comcast. Proceeds from this event go to Construction Angels, a nonprofit organization that provides immediate financial assistance and grief counseling to the families of construction workers who have unfortunately lost their lives while working on the job site. Nearly $1,100 was donated last year with more expected from this year’s 8-1-1 event. For more information, go to www.races2run.com or www.missutilitydelmarva.com.
