A Rehoboth-themed mural now adorns the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.
During a meeting in July, Rehoboth commissioners approved a design of New York-based artist Brett Steeves for a mural on the blank wall of the convention center. Steeves began work on the mural the second week of September and was finished by the end of the third week.
The city worked with the Rehoboth Art League to find Steeves, who competed with 20 other artists for the job.
The mural is on the east side of the building, directly across from the recently dedicated Steve Elkins Way that leads to Second Street and Baltimore Avenue. Scenes on the mural include the Boardwalk and Dolle’s, the Bandstand, dolphins, a child on the beach, an egret and a sandcastle.
The city budgeted a $5,000 stipend for completion of the mural. City Spokeswoman Krys Johnson said Sept. 20 there will be a dedication of the mural in October, but the date hadn’t been finalized.
This is the second mural the city has commissioned over the years. Former Rehoboth Beach Commissioner Patti Shreeve painted a mural on the west side of the old city hall.
