Rehoboth Boardwalk committee to meet

The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and Beach Committee has scheduled a meeting for 9 a.m., Monday, Nov. 18, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

The agenda calls for a comparison of amenities on boardwalks in New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware, an update from city staff on various projects and a review of 2019 statistics from the Rehoboth Beach Patrol.

The Rehoboth Beach Parking Advisory Committee has scheduled a meeting for 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

Public meeting on wind turbines set Nov. 19

Senate Minority Leader Sen. Gerald Hocker, R-Ocean View, and Rep. Ronald Gray, R-Selbyville, have scheduled a public meeting to discuss the Skipjack Wind Farm and the proposed transmission connection in Fenwick Island State Park. The meeting will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the auditorium of Indian River High School, 29772 Armory Road, Dagsboro. Skipjack Wind Farm is a 15-turbine, 120-megawatt-producing offshore wind farm proposed for the Atlantic Ocean. The project will be located roughly 18 miles offshore and is expected to produce enough energy to power about 35,000 homes. The size of the turbines is unknown at this point, but Ørsted, the Danish company building the wind farm, has proposed using General Electric’s Haliade-X, a 12-megawatt turbine that has a height of over 850 feet when a blade is straight up in the air.

Maintenance dredging proposed for Joy Beach

The property owners association of Joy Beach, located outside Lewes on the Angola peninsula, has submitted a subaqueous lands permit and water quality application to Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to mechanically maintenance dredge 3,500 cubic yards of material in multiple artificial lagoons and in an access channel to Rehoboth Bay. The application calls for disposal of 2,500 cubic yards of material to be deposited directly onto Lot 91, at the corner of Hunt Club and Bookhammer Landing roads. The remaining 1,000 cubic yards of material would be deposited at a community-owned vacant lot adjacent to Hunt Club Road. Ocean rower to speak in Lewes Nov. 16

Don Victor Mooney, who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in 2014, will be a guest speaker at the Rollins Community Center, 101 Adams Ave., Lewes, beginning at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 16. Mooney is president of the H.R. 1242 Resilience Project, which has a goal of renaming the Virginia Inside Passage in honor of Harriet Tubman, who navigated the Delmarva Peninsula to usher many slaves to freedom. Mooney will speak about his journey from Africa to the United States as well as his efforts to honor Harriet Tubman. 

Milton planners to meet Nov. 19

Milton Planning and Zoning will meet at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Milton library, to discuss a special permitted use for Milton Fire Department.

The department is asking to allow for an emergency generator accessory to the existing fire station on 108 Chestnut St. The commission will hold a public hearing on the request before discussion and a possible vote.

Route 1 bridges subject of DelDOT workshop

The Delaware Department of Transportation will have a public workshop to discuss rehabilitation of the two Route 1 bridges over the Broadkill River between Lewes and Milton from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Mispillion Elementary School, 311 Lovers Lane, Milford. The purpose of the workshop is to present details of the proposed project and to solicit feedback from the public. Comments can be made at the workshop or can be mailed to DelDOT Community Relations, Attn. Bryce Baker, project manager, PO Box 778, Dover, DE 19903.

Henlopen TID on Sussex council agenda

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda is an update and discussion on the proposed Henlopen Transportation Improvement District. See a complete agenda at sussexcountyde.gov. Sussex council approves storage facility

At its Nov. 12 meeting, Sussex County Council unanimously approved one conditional-use application and denied another. Council approved an application filed by Brent and Lisa Hershey for a storage facility with outdoor storage on a 9-acre parcel at 14374 Clyde’s Drive, Milton. Backing a recommendation from the Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission, council denied an application filed by Linda Ann Yupco-Connors for equipment storage on a 1-acre parcel at 32260 Jimtown Road near Lewes. Councilman Irwin “I.G.” Burton of Lewes said the use was not consistent with the residential surroundings.

Route 113 southbound now open in Millsboro

Route 113 southbound in Millsboro is now open to traffic between Route 24 and Radish Road. A Delaware Department of Transportation contractor has replaced the existing southbound portion of the Iron Branch bridge to allow traffic to pass. However, during the next two weeks, motorists can anticipate daytime lane closures to complete the construction. Lane closures will end Friday, Nov. 22.

20th RD Democratic Committee to meet

The guest speaker at the Thursday, Nov. 21 meeting of the RD 20 Democratic Committee will be Drew Boyce, director of planning, Delaware Department of Transportation.  Boyce’s presentation will focus on upcoming DelDOT projects in eastern Sussex County.  Boyce has been with DelDOT for over 30 years, and was appointed the director of planning in 2012. Boyce is a registered professional engineer in Delaware and Pennsylvania. He is also responsible for bicycle and pedestrian programs, data and statistical analysis, and the development of each six-year transportation program. The meeting will be at Fish On Restaurant, 17300 Village Main Blvd. Lewes, with committee members and guests gathering at 5:30 p.m. for refreshments and dinner (optional) followed at 6 p.m. by the guest speaker’s discussion.

Following Boyce’s presentation, RD 20 Democratic Committee will conduct its monthly business meeting. Registered Democrats are welcome to attend.  RD 20 is the local Democratic Party organization for residents in the Lewes, Milton, Belltown, Coolspring, Jimtown, Pinetown and Harbeson areas of Sussex County.
