Sussex food drive nets more than 29,000 donations

Schools, county employees, businesses join forces to feed those in need

Nearly 29,000 food donations were collected during the Sussex County Caroling on the Circle food drive spearheaded each year by Sussex County officials.

The drive provides food to organizations throughout the county.

During Sussex County Council's Feb. 4 meeting, Sussex County Administrator Todd Lawson read a list of participants while Council President Mike Vincent of Seaford presented plaques to representatives from schools and business groups taking part in the drive.

Topping the list with 3,419 food donations was Millsboro Middle School, followed by First State Manufactured Housing Association with 3,398 donations, and Fuqua, Willard, Stevens and Schab with 2,750 donations. Sussex County employee donations are not counted when the top participants are awarded.

Other participants and their donations included: Georgetown Elementary School, 2,300; Colonial East, 1,375: Flex World Fitness, 825; Sussex County Association of Realtors, 1,425; Milton Elementary School, 1,800; Delmarva Christian High School, 337; George Washington Carver Academy, 60; Cape Henlopen High School, 2,000; Georgetown Middle School, 300; Little Einstein Preschool, 450; Sussex Central High School, 300; Sussex Academy, 250; Aloft AeroArchitects, 1,338; Sussex County Council, 1,375; Sussex County employees, 4,444.

Lawson complimented county staff who volunteer their time to collect and distribute the food.
