Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council 7297 donates to food banks

April 22, 2020

The Star of the Sea Council 7297 of the Knights of Columbus is made up of nearly 200 members in the Rehoboth Beach area of Sussex County.

Charity is at the the heart of the Knights’ work, and charitable service is one way they carry out their Catholic faith.

During the recent Lenten Season, the council was working to collect 40 cans of food per person at St. Edmond Catholic Church to feed those who are hungry in Sussex County. In 2019, the drive collected nearly 10,000 pounds of food and more than $3,000. This year the Knights were off to a good start when the pandemic closures mandated a suspension of food collections.

The council decided to supplement its initial efforts and support the needs of local food banks with cash contributions to several local organizations. With the financial contributions and food collections, along with the council donations, Star of the Sea Council has donated more than 3,250 pounds of food and nearly $2,000.

The council encourages its members and the community at large to support these and other worthy local food bank efforts: Community Resource Center food rescue and Cape Henlopen Food Basket, 37510 Oyster House Road, Rehoboth; Jusst Sooup Ministries, 18483 Cool Spring Road, Milton; Casa San Francisco, 127 Broad St., Milton; Harry K Foundation, 313 South Boardwalk, Rehoboth Beach; and Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth, 32409 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Lewes.

The council also made donations to Beebe Medical Foundation in support of personal protective equipment for local healthcare workers and to Birthright Delaware, which provides support to women who are pregnant or think they may be pregnant.
