William K. McMahon, enjoyed sports, family

July 6, 2020

William K. McMahon, 78, of Rehoboth Beach passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020, peacefully at his home.

Bill was born in Wilmington Feb. 11, 1942, son of the late Theodore and Sarah McMahon.  He graduated from Wilmington High School and attended the University of Delaware, majoring in electrical engineering.  During college he worked as a draftsman for the Wilmington Water Department, and afterward worked at Atlantic Aviation in New Castle, designing and installing aircraft instrument panels.

He served in the Delaware National Guard from 1965-71.   While in the guard, he played in their touch football league and participated in the 1st World Championship Tournament for Touch Football in Columbus, Ohio (Nov. 1970).

Bill always had a keen desire to come back to the beach where he had spent all his summers growing up at his grandparents’ house in Dewey Beach, and in 1971 he returned and started up his construction business, McMahon Bros. Inc.

In 1976, he worked with the Sussex Committee of 100 pertaining to energy and water development in the area.  Bill started a real estate company, Beach Realty Inc., and was the president and owner of Beach Homes Inc.

In his free time, Bill truly enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially beach volleyball and golf.  He loved traveling with family and friends and planning local fun events such as his “family olympics” and annual “5 plus play” beach volleyball tournaments at his home on Route 24.  Bill was a devoted father and husband, and very proud of his family and their accomplishments.  He will be truly missed by his wife of 55 years, Cheryl (Patterson) McMahon; his children, William (Virginia), Trent (Kathy) and Brandy; his six grandchildren, Katie, Alex, Connor, Molly, Lilly and Quin; three brothers; three sisters; and many nieces and nephews and their families.  Bill was predeceased by his mother, father and sister, Evonne Freck.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Dr. Daniel DePietropoala, Melissa Imbergamo, Belinda Dise, and staff of Seasons Hospice; EMTs from Mid- Sussex Rescue Squad; friends and neighbors for their loving care and support.

Service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad, 31738 Indian Mission Road, Millsboro, DE 19966 in memory of William K. McMahon.
