Controversy over college football playoff rankings

December 25, 2020

I am usually a Notre Dame football fan, but what is the point of having an ACC Championship game in the first place, if who wins doesn’t determine whether they are going to make the national playoffs? Clemson crushed Notre Dame in the ACC championship game by the score of 36-10. I think Texas A&M should have been ranked above Notre Dame after that loss and made the college playoffs because of that. Not so this year. Notre Dame will play Alabama in one semifinal game and Clemson plays Ohio State in the other matchup. These games will be played New Year’s Day. I think Clemson and Alabama will be favored to make it to the championship game, and I think Alabama will win because of their unstoppable offense.

On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles lost what eventually became a good game against Arizona 33-26. Even with the loss, it was a lot of fun to watch and see both teams play well. The battle between the quarterbacks, Jalen Hurts for the Eagles and Kyler Murray for the Cardinals, (both of whom played at Oklahoma in college) was cool because those two look like the same player. Unless Jalen gets hurt in these last two games, I think Carson Wentz's time as an Eagle is over. They will not be able to coexist together on the same team, so Carson would have to be released or traded in the off-season. Carson will still be included in Eagles history for being a big part of the Super Bowl winning team for 2017-18.

The Eagles should have won this game, but their terrible first quarter performance is what cost them the opportunity. It was like they were sleepwalking for the whole quarter. It was 16-0 before they woke up and started playing. Since they lost this game, their playoff chances took a huge hit. In order for them to make the playoffs, the Eagles have to win the last two games against Dallas and Washington. Washington also has to lose to the Panthers on Sunday and the Giants need to lose one of their last two games. I don’t know which team deserves to make the playoffs from this under .500 group, but somebody will. Dallas and New York both still have a chance to win the Division too. Just crazy!

I wish everyone a safe, healthy and happy holiday. Merry Christmas.
