Milton-area man latest to face Jan. 6-related charges
A Milton-area man is the latest to face charges in connection with entering the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
In an 8-page criminal complaint filed Jan. 11 in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Jeffrey Schaeffer is charged with four misdemeanor offenses – entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly conduct in a capitol building; and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a capitol building.
The misdemeanor charges are the same filed against Nicholas Lattanzi of Millsboro on Jan. 10. The charges carry up to $500 in fines and six months in prison.
Court records state the Federal Bureau of Investigation received information anonymously that Schaeffer went inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. Using a search warrant, the FBI obtained a telephone number associated with Schaeffer’s Facebook account, and matched photos on the Facebook page with surveillance footage of Schaeffer inside the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6.
According to court records, Schaeffer was inside the capitol building for about 28 minutes. FBI Special Agent Brian Dinkel states that there is probable cause that Schaeffer entered the building and participated in a chant.
There was no information on Schaeffer’s arraignment as of the Cape Gazette’s deadline.
Lattanzi was arraigned Jan. 13 and released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on March 15.
