No school board election in Cape district this year
A school board election will not be held in the Cape district this year, as incumbent Julie Derrick was the only candidate to run for the Area D representative seat by the filing deadline.
Derrick also ran unopposed in 2017 for the seat, which encompasses Rehoboth and Dewey Beach.
Currently serving as board vice president, Derrick is the school board representative on the Cape Henlopen Educational Foundation board and is an alternate on the Delaware School Boards Association Legislative Committee.
In prior years, Derrick served as a mentor at Rehoboth Elementary School, and on the citizens budget oversight committee and the wellness committee.
Derrick will receive her certificate of election at the board’s organizational meeting in July. Her four-year term will begin July 1, 2022, and expire June 30, 2026.
School board seats are now held for four years, after the passage of House Bill 92 in October reduced the term of office from five to four years for school board members elected after Dec. 31, 2021.
