Next phase of Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail work continues

July 8, 2022

Phase 7 of the Lewes-to-Georgetown Trail is underway with work taking place in two locations between Lewes and Harbeson. Because there is not a signalized intersection at the Cool Spring Road-Route 9 intersection, the trail section will run parallel to the north side of Route 9 to the Fisher Road-Hudson Road intersection, which will have a push-button-activated crossing for cyclists and pedestrians.

While workers finish up that section along Route 9, work is also underway on a trail spur along the abandoned rail line on the south side of Route 9 linking Fisher Road to Stephen Hudson Park at the Cool Spring Road-Route 9 intersection. The Sussex County Land Trust has plans to construct a trailhead in that area. Work is expected to be completed in October.

The current trail links to Cape Henlopen State Park and goes from Gills Neck Road in Lewes to the Cool Spring Road intersection. So far, nearly 10 miles of the 17-mile trail have been completed. After this section is finished, the remaining sections include Fisher Road to Harbeson Road, Harbeson Road to Gravel Hill Road, Gravel Hill Road to Park Avenue and Park Avenue to Airport Road just west of Georgetown. A Georgetown to Airport Road section has already been completed.
