Joint meeting being held in Lewes Aug. 29

Lewes Mayor and City Council and Lewes Board of Public Works will meet at 5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 29, at the Rollins Center.

Discussions will include the transfer of plumbing inspections from BPW to the city, facility needs between the two entities, the Lewes Beach Storm Water Study, and the BPW mitigation and finance committees.

Lewes council workshop set Aug. 30

Lewes Mayor and City Council will host a workshop Tuesday, Aug. 30, following a 1 p.m. tax appeal hearing for 111 Madison Ave. at City Hall.

Discussions will include canal leases, planning commission action plan priorities, comprehensive plan review draft, on-street parking and short-term rentals.

Officials will also review a franchise agreement proposal from telecommunications provider Shentel.

Lewes seeks Christmas tree donor

The City of Lewes hosts an annual community Christmas tree lighting the first Saturday in December at Zwaanendael Park, for neighbors and friends to gather and kick off the holiday season. The city is seeking a donation of a 30-foot, nicely shaped balsam fir, Douglas fir, Fraser fir or spruce tree. Sussex Tree Inc. will cut down, transport and install the tree at the park. Anyone who has a large tree on their property they would like to see at the center of the City of Lewes celebration should contact Janet Reeves, parks and marina manager, at jreeves@ci.lewes.de.us or 302-645-7777, Ext. 100.

Sussex council meets at 1:15 p.m, Aug. 30

Sussex County Council will meet at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda are two public hearings for conditional-use applications in the Milton area, including one filed by Rockswitch Properties LLC for a real estate office near the Route 1-Deep Branch Road intersection and another filed by Milton Community Food Pantry, 12898 Union St. Ext.

Special Rehoboth meeting Aug. 30

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for continued discussion on updating the city’s tree code.

Rehoboth Boardwalk committee to meet

The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and Beach Committee will meet at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for an end-of-season update from Police Chief Keith Banks and a status report on commercialization of the Boardwalk.

Milton Town Council meeting set Aug. 29

Milton Town Council will meet at 3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 29, to discuss and possibly vote on a package of amendments to the town zoning code.

Mayor John Collier said the changes are intended to clean up loose ends in the zoning code.

Among the changes are cleaning up definitions and typographical errors, adding government uses to zoning districts, including electric vehicle charging stations as a permitted accessory use, requiring posting on a property subject to a public hearing and requiring additional information to be shown on preliminary site-plan applications such as sourcewater information, building elevations and lighting plans.

The ordinance was recommended for approval by the planning and zoning commission and was subject to an Aug. 1 public hearing.

Dewey charter and code committee meets Aug. 29

The Dewey Beach Charter and Code Committee will meet virtually at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 29.

Members will discuss and possibly vote on a recommendation to town commissioners about funding to hire an outside expert in municipal code review.

Sussex council awards grants to nonprofits

Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants at its Aug. 23 meeting: $2,500 to West Side New Beginnings in Rehoboth for Project Safety street lighting; $1,000 to Delaware State College Alumni Association for its Band to the Beach program; $500 to Friends of the Milton Public Library for restoration of Milton High School 1950-1974 yearbooks; $1,000 to AIDS Delaware for its annual AIDS Walk Delaware; $2,000 to Autism Delaware for its Blue Jean Ball; $2,000 to Lewes Public Library for its Christmas Carol event; and $1,000 to Concerns of Police Survivors for its 20th annual Celebration of the Delaware Chapter.
