Two 11-win teams met on the hardwood of Appoquinimink Jan. 26 to battle it out in a non-conference matchup. When the grueling game was over, Cape had garnered its 12th consecutive win with a 61-55 victory over the Jags. The Vikings move to 12-2, while the Jags are 11-3.

Cape fell behind early, but fought back to trail by just one point at the end of the first quarter. The Vikings upped their game in the second, taking a 22-15 halftime lead into the locker room. The Jags outscored the Vikings by one point in the second half, but Cape held on for a six-point win.

Displaying the scratches from the physical game, junior Lulu Rishko said: “It took a while to get used to their type of play, but we figured it out and I think we overcame it. It’s so fun to play a good team. When we get into it and it gets intense, we put our game faces on.”

“They are a tougher team than what we’ve faced recently,” said Hayden Hudson. “It took a little longer to get into the game, and we had to play tougher.”

A bruised and battered Faith Re led all scorers with 23 points, including four three-pointers.

Amalia Fruchtman, Ja’Onna Lee and Mya Maull dropped in 10, nine and eight points, respectively. They, along with Hudson, teamed for 27 rebounds. Hudson also garnered seven assists to go along with six points.

“During a timeout, I pointed to the scratches on their arms,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “That’s how it’s going to be. You have to be strong with the ball and you can’t expect to get the call. That’s how it is on the road. I’m proud of them. They are getting tougher.”
