Cape 8-10 Pat Knight wraps up all-star season for local teams

Girls hold heads high despite loss, celebrate great tourney
August 5, 2024

An all-star season on the diamond has wrapped up for Cape Region teams after the Cape Pat Knight 8-10 softball team concluded its season Aug. 1 at Lower Sussex Little League.

The Lewes girls jumped out to an early lead, but Lower Sussex proved to have a potent offense and stellar defense, allowing just one hit in the contest. Cape surrendered only two hits, but Lower Sussex was patient at the plate and aggressive on the base paths to take the 12-2 victory.

A bright spot in the loss was the base-running prowess of Bristol Pizzaia and Grace Sconieczki, who each scored thanks to their hustle. Emery Bailey and Lilly Duffy registered two of the more impressive outs of the game. Bailey calmly fielded a ground ball to get an out at first in the nick of time while Duffy remained strong on a steal of home to record a big out.

Losing may have ended Cape’s season, but following a talk from the coaches, the girls were in a celebratory mood, having wrapped up a postseason tournament surrounded by some of the best Little League softball players in the world. Instead of tears, the girls sported smiles and had each others’ backs. Some took that literally and hopped right on.

Putting a bow on their experience, the squad dumped their Gatorade bucket, filled with water, on coach Kim Sconieczki.
