I have been concerned for some time about the choice of violent adjectives to describe our elections. Words like "fighting for you" and "battleground states" in political literature and news reports contribute to an already-charged election environment.
Recently, I received separate mailings for a statewide candidate and a Sussex County candidate. Both candidates let me know they were fighting for me.
I shared my concerns with both candidates about the use of fighting.
Here is an excerpt from the handwritten reply by the county candidate.
"... I use the term fight figuratively. And in this day and age, people want Democrats who will fight back. The term works well communications-wise with most people."
This Democrat is not looking for continued fighting on my behalf. Candidates note: the term fight does not work well with me. I've had enough charged language from both parties. I'm looking for candidates who will advocate and work for me. It's time for elected leaders and candidates to bring civility back to political campaigns.
