As election time approaches, I am compelled to comment on the candidates. I note that Kim Hoey Stevenson is running for state Senate in the Sixth District. I cannot in good conscience ignore the fact that she served on the Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission for eight years, a fact she has conveniently omitted.
In her campaign ad, she lists on her agenda a list of platitudes that every candidate employs when running for office: healthcare, public safety, education, preserving small businesses, protecting beaches and preserving farms and open spaces. This last agenda item struck a cord.
The Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission has endorsed and approved almost every request for development of farmlands and green spaces submitted in the past 10 years, development that has been unchecked, out of control and approved without objection. Check the statistics. I cannot recall ever seeing Hoey Stevenson voting against, or objecting to, the unchecked development in Sussex County in her eight years on the commission.
If I am wrong I would like to see the evidence. Hoey Stevenson's assertion that she will preserve farms and open spaces is hollow and unsustainable. No one is against progress, but we do wish to see our governing officials employ intelligent and comprehensive long-range planning and governing transparency in all that they do.
