Athletes of the Week May 2

Megan Busche

Megan won her seventh state Pepsi bowling championship March 23, which is a state record. In June 2024, Megan was inducted into the Lower Delaware USBC Hall of Fame as a Star of Tomorrow for her performance on the lanes. She regularly tops the state top 15 list, consistently averaging over 200 every year. She also holds regional titles competing on the Storm Mid-Atlantic Junior Bowlers Tour. Megan is a 2024 Cape High grad who plans to compete at the collegiate level after she finishes her first two years at Delaware Tech. She started bowling at 5 years old and has a highest score of 299. She was recently awarded the girls’ high scratch series of 747 and girls high average of 202 at the end-of-year awards ceremony at Milford Lanes. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the gym and the beach.

Alivia Heers
This senior honors and AP student has been lighting up the softball diamond this year. She recently went yard in the wins over Sussex Central and Delmarva Christian. She is hitting .442 with six homers and 29 RBIs. She surpassed 100 RBIs and 22 home runs for her career. "She is off to a great start all around, both catching and at the plate," said Cape coach Mike Tkach. "She is such a team-oriented person. She does a great job handling our pitchers. At the plate, she is so powerful and is a threat to go yard every time she steps up to the plate." Alivia is active in DECA, mock trial and the national honor society, and also plays on the unified basketball team. In the off-season, she plays for the VA Glory travel softball squad. She also was a featured singer in the Cape musical “Chicago.” Alivia will be attending St. Joe's, where she will study supply chain management. When she finds time to relax, she hangs out with her family and friends and goes to the beach.

This Milton runner broke her own state age-group record of 3:58:12 for the marathon with a Boston Marathon time of 3:54:58, which was fourth in her age group. Deb ran her first half in 1:57:46 and her second half in 1:57:12. Deb owns seven Delaware records on the roads. In the 65-69 age group, Deb holds the record in the 5K (23:00), 10K (49:23) and the marathon (4:01:37). In the 70-74 age group, Deb holds the record in the 5K (22:06), 10-miler (1:20:56), half-marathon (1:49:45) and marathon (3:54:58). Deb was back on the roads last weekend at the Scott Trot 5K, where she won the 70-74 age group in 27:17.

Jack Meszaros

Jack is the face-off specialist for the Sussex Academy boys' lacrosse team and has dominated his counterparts in 2025. The sophomore rarely loses, as evidenced by his 500th career face-off win against Smyrna April 24, and has evolved into an important part of the Seahawks' offense with five goals on the year, most coming straight off the draw. Taco, as he is called by friends and family, started playing in kindergarten and picked up face-offs in second grade. In addition to working with a personal coach, he credits Sussex Academy coach Andrew Fox with boosting his confidence and his sparring partner, Armaan Chadha, for his varsity success. He estimates the duo will perform up to 300 face-offs against each other in any given two-hour time frame. Taco wins his fair share of face-offs immediately, but he has reached his elite success rate by mastering the art of the ground ball. He plays travel ball for Mad Max Capital of Washington, D.C., and enjoys doing labs in biology. During his downtime, Taco enjoys playing Fortnite.
