Governor’s volunteer award honors SCI Thresholds coordinator
A Governor’s Volunteer Service Award was presented to Sandra Frunzi for her work as coordinator of Sussex Correctional Institution’s Thresholds Program.
Offered three times annually, the 10-week course teaches decision-making and goal-setting skills to incarcerated men. Sessions include writing classes, and meditation workshops on cultivating mindfulness and resilience.
This year, the Thresholds program involved 112 inmates, 12 community facilitators and 12 inside facilitators, comprising incarcerated individuals who receive training and encouragement from Frunzi.
As a result of Frunzi’s leadership over the past 10 years, more than 500 incarcerated men have benefited from Thresholds.
A former inmate said, “Sandra believed in me from the moment I first took the Thresholds program as an inmate at SCI in Georgetown. She continued to support me as I became an inside facilitator, and now as the first in Delaware to return as a community facilitator after serving my sentence.”
