RES resource officer named Delaware Mentor of the Month
The Cape Henlopen School District announced Rehoboth Beach Police Department Officer Robert Scisco was selected as the Delaware Mentor of the Month for May by Creative Mentoring, the nonprofit organization the district partners with to oversee its mentoring program.
Scisco is a mentor to Yanziel Rodriguez, a rising fourth-grader at Rehoboth Elementary, where Scisco is also the school resource officer.
Once a week for the last three years, Scisco has met with Yanziel to talk, play games and spend time together. One of their favorite games to play is checkers. “Before every move, I try to remind him to stop, take a moment and think first,” said Scisco. “It’s good advice for the game, but also good advice for life in general.” Yanziel describes his mentor as awesome, and said he really enjoys being a part of the mentoring program.
“We are incredibly proud to have Officer Scisco recognized as a Creative Mentoring Mentor of the Month in recognition for his dedication and time to creating such a positive relationship,” said Kim Hoey Stevenson, district mentor coordinator. “As both a school resource officer and a mentor, he’s building trust in a way that’s real and lasting. His ability to connect through play and presence helps his mentee feel seen, supported and safe.”
Cape currently has more than 200 mentors throughout the district and is always looking for more volunteers. To learn more, contact Kim Hoey Stevenson at mentoring@cape.k12.de.us.
