Atia Sabbagh found Mairead Rishko at 7:41 of the third quarter for the only goal of Cape’s 1-0 win over Indian River on the slow Bermuda pitch in Dagsboro Oct. 2.
The win boosted Cape’s overall record to 9-1, with all wins coming via shutout. IR, under coach Tori Huk, is now an established contender in Division II. The Indians have a record of 7-2 on the season. The loss was the first in the state this season for Indian River. They lost to Gunston School of Maryland 4-3.
“We played everyone on the roster except Jordynn Bowe, the backup goalie,” said coach Kate Austin. “We have a deep bench. It's nice to get so many players into the game knowing they can all do the job.”
Cape dominated field possession throughout the four quarters, with a 20-2 advantage in penalty corners.
IR senior goalie Zoey Quillen was credited with 11 saves.
Indian River got an untimed corner to end the game, getting the ball dead center onto the stick of leading scorer Baylie Williamson (23 goals on season), but the ball was checked away before Williamson could crank a shot on goal.
Corner Quips - Delmar and Lake Forest are down in the South, so the upcoming Indian River at Sussex Academy game Thursday, Oct. 16, will likely determine the Southern Division champion. Smyrna lost at home to Episcopal Academy of Pennsylvania 3-1 Sept. 30, dropping to 8-1 on the season. Cape will host unbeaten Newark Charter Tuesday, Oct. 14, on Senior Night. Cape has just five seniors on a 20-person roster. Cape’s JV (6-1-1) defeated the Indians 3-0, with freshman goalie Alexis Puddicombe credited with the shutout.
