Cape soccer defeats the Bucs

Vikings bounce back from pair of 2-1 losses
October 12, 2025

The Cape boys’ soccer team returned to the winning column Oct. 9, with a 5-1 win over Milford at the Bucs’ Briggs Stadium.

Cape got on the scoreboard first on a header from Brenner Short in the box off a corner from Lee Levis 16 minutes into the game. Will Burke connected on a nifty back kick shot past Milford keeper Brayden Weddle from Seth Benjamin.

“It felt great to get back in the win column against Milford,” said Short. “This win gives us some momentum heading into these last four games, specifically the conference ones. We’re focused on finishing the regular season strong.”

“It was a great way to get out of the losing streak and great for us to keep our heads from the last two games,” said Benjamin. “[Coach Patrick] Kilby did great with helping us keep our minds positive and focused on the next time. To keep the team on a positive note, we need positive talk from the coaches, the fans and players within our team. We are looking at a few tough end-of-season games, but with our mentality now, I think we can get the job done.”

Coming out of halftime up 2-0, the Vikings had goals from Jackson Hess, Burke and Carter Matarazzi. Helpers came from Matarazzi and two from senior Lawson Whaley.

A small chink in the Vikings’ armor came from James Sollie, who put the Bucs on the scoreboard with a penalty-kick goal at the 48-minute mark.

Cape outshot the Bucs 13-5, with Cape keepers Anton Schierenberg stopping three and Jacob Panyko making one save. Weddle made eight saves for the Bucs.

Cape held a 7-1 edge in corners.

“It’s a good conference win and a good team win for us,” said Cape head coach Patrick Kilby. “We’re looking to get two more this week to stay a competition for the conference.”

The Vikings travel to Sussex Central Tuesday, Oct. 14 for a northern division match up with the Knights.
