Think Pink—But Don’t Forget the Blue: Breast Cancer Affects Men Too

October 16, 2025

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—a time when pink ribbons remind us of the importance of early detection and support for those affected. But what often gets overlooked is that breast cancer isn't just a women’s disease. Men can get breast cancer too.

Although male breast cancer is rare—accounting for less than 1% of all breast cancer cases—it can be just as serious. Many men are unaware they even can get breast cancer, which often leads to delayed diagnosis and more advanced stages at the time of detection.

Risk factors include age (most cases occur in men over 60), family history, genetic mutations (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2), and conditions that alter hormone levels like liver disease or Klinefelter syndrome. Symptoms can include a lump in the chest area, nipple discharge, or changes in the skin around the nipple.

The good news? When caught early, male breast cancer is highly treatable. That’s why awareness is so critical. If you’re a man with a family history of breast cancer, talk to your doctor about your risk. And don’t ignore changes in your chest—it could save your life.

This October, while we wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness, let’s also remember the blue. Men matter in this fight too.
