Cape district honors H.O.B nurse, substitute with GEM awards
The Cape Henlopen School District presented Going the Extra Mile awards for October to Karen Neuwirth, school nurse at H.O. Brittingham Elementary, and Jordan Winkfield, a substitute teacher at HOB.
Neuwirth was selected as HOB’s Staff GEM Award honoree for her unwavering dedication to student health and well-being. Known for her calm demeanor and caring approach, Neuwirth creates a supportive and trusting atmosphere where students feel safe sharing their health concerns. Her welcoming smile and steady presence bring comfort and reassurance to students, even during the busiest moments in her office.
Beyond her work within the school, Neuwirth partners with community organizations including Lions Clubs, Nemours Pediatrics and Smile Check, ensuring that students have access to vital services such as medical care, vision screenings and dental checkups. She also collaborates closely with teachers, staff and families to support students’ physical, emotional and mental health. Her compassion and commitment make her an irreplaceable part of the HOB community, said Yvette Davenport, HOB principal.
A proud Cape Henlopen graduate and recent alumnus of Temple University, Winkfield has quickly made a positive impact at HOB, said Davenport. He served as a first-grade teacher during the summer academy and is currently filling in for the reading specialist while she is on maternity leave.
Working primarily with kindergarten through second-grade students, Winkfield leads small groups, conferences with students and supports literacy growth efforts to help close the achievement gap. He also steps up wherever needed, whether lending a hand in the cafeteria or assisting around the building. With aspirations to become a full-time teacher in the Cape district, Winkfield’s dedication, positivity and enthusiasm for education have already made him an invaluable member of the HOB team.
