PETA’s proposal makes sense

December 16, 2025

PETA’s proposal that dog guardians in Delaware be required to walk their canine companions three times a day is common sense and badly needed. It should be the law everywhere!

Anyone who objects should try spending 24 hours locked in a room, with only two bathroom breaks. I’m sure they’d quickly understand why walks aren’t optional, but vital to dogs’ health and happiness. Interactive playtime in a fenced yard is great, but it’s no substitute for the mental stimulation, social interaction and fun of sniffing fresh scents, meeting new friends and exploring different areas on a walk.

Walks are the highlight of dogs’ days, so use a comfortable harness (never painful choke or prong collars) and let pups stop and sniff to their hearts’ content. Dog boots and sweaters, along with common-sense precautions like walking in the mornings or late at night in hot weather can make walks safe and enjoyable in most weather conditions.

Daily walks are part of the responsibility – and joy – of caring for a canine companion. If you aren’t willing to provide them, please don’t adopt a dog.
