Cape High guests kick off sports fiction unit at Lewes Elementary
Cape Henlopen High School boys' track and field head coach Ellis Gaulden and student-athlete Elijah Shockley-Taylor visited second-grade classrooms at Lewes Elementary School Jan. 20, to help kick off the students’ sports fiction unit as part of the American Reading Company curriculum.
During the visit, “Coach G” and Elijah spoke with students about sports and what it truly means to be a great athlete. They explained that success in athletics is about more than winning games or competitions; it’s about the habits, choices and character athletes bring with them every day.
The guests discussed the importance of effort and self-discipline, sharing how consistent practice and willingness to improve help athletes grow over time. They also highlighted the value of following rules and being a good sport, emphasizing respect for teammates, coaches and opponents both on and off the field.
Gaulden and Elijah stressed the power of a positive attitude. They reminded students that words matter, especially when used to encourage and uplift others. By choosing positive language and believing in themselves, students can build confidence and support those around them.
The visit concluded with an encouraging message for students to always try their best in sports, school and daily life. The experience provided a meaningful connection between literacy and real-world experiences, helping students better understand the themes they will explore in their sports fiction unit while reinforcing important life skills.
