Friends of Laurel Library accepts $17,000 donation
Members of 100 Women Who Care Southern Delaware recently gathered to present a contribution of $17,175 to the Friends of Laurel Library.
The funds will support a baby supply station, one of many community services that would not otherwise be funded by the state library system. The wide variety of employment, social and health support services the library provides include: English as a Second Language lessons; electric and heating assistance program support; job/career guidance and training, resume support and computer assistance; help with SNAP and Medicaid applications; housing and food resources; after-school snacks and kickboxing for kids; drug, eating and gambling problem treatment information; mental health support; hygiene stations and menstrual products in restrooms; fiber art project sessions; a place with coffee for seniors to gather, and an annual Block Party and festivities for the community.
The Laurel Library was founded in 1909 by the Laurel chapter of the New Century Club. Today, a 14-member staff, an active Friends group and a committed board of commissioners devote their time to maintaining a public library that continues to serve the community from the center of town, providing print and electronic resources as well as exciting programs for all the citizens in Laurel’s service area.
