Gather Bakery owners Isabel and Matthew Walsh introduced alfajores to the Cape Region with a pop-up event at Rehoboth Beach’s Bella Luna boutique in 2022 on Presidents’ Day weekend. Exactly four years later, the Walshes have opened up their own Rehoboth Avenue location.

“We’re still getting used to the kitchen, but it feels great,” said Isabel, during an interview a week after the store opened Presidents’ Day weekend 2026.

The bakery is located at 204 Rehoboth Ave., in a small space next to Charm City Run Rehoboth Beach. Most recently a mystic shop, a front-to-back renovation of the space was needed. The couple credited general contractor Stephanie Antosca Boright and interior designer Maria Baer with turning their vision into a reality. It wasn’t easy to make this space work, but they did it, said Matt.

This is the second Rehoboth Avenue location the couple looked at to open their store. They had previously anticipated opening in a similarly small building up the street, but ultimately, Matt said, it didn’t work out.

Frustrated, but undeterred, the Walshes kept looking. They jumped at the opportunity to take over their new home.

There was a lot of interest in this space, so they had to act quickly, said Isabel.

The Walshes continue to specialize in their South and Central American desserts called alfajores, which are two shortbread cookies sandwiched together with a creamy, caramel-based filling called dulce de leche. However, they have expanded their offerings to also include savory biscuits, soups, hummus, shortbread cookies, tres leche and jars of their dulce de leche filling.

The morning of the interview, Isabel was preparing eggs for egg-and-cheese sandwiches on biscuits.

The Walshes grew their reputation, and their loyal following, by being mainstays at a number of the local farmers markets for the past few summers. That will change this year.

Moving forward, Gather will be at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market only, said Isabel. It’s sad to leave the other markets, but important so they have time to take care of the brick-and-mortar storefront, she said.
