Friends, Cape alums reunite in Italy during Olympics
Two Cape Henlopen High School alumni from Sussex County recently reunited in Venice, Italy, while traveling abroad to attend the 2026 Winter Olympics events.
Jamin Hudson of Lewes traveled to Italy with his family to attend several Olympic competitions and explore the country. The trip also included skiing in the Dolomites and visiting cities connected to the Olympic events.
“My family and I, we love skiing,” said Hudson. “Two of my great-grandparents were from Italy, and I thought it would be a great way to introduce my sons to a broader world, the Italian culture, history and language, while watching elite athletes compete from around the world.”
Before leaving for the trip, Hudson saw on Facebook that Jason Johnson of Milton, a close friend and fellow Cape graduate, was also traveling to Italy with his family for the Olympics. After realizing their travel schedules would briefly overlap, the two coordinated a quick meet-up in Venice during the city’s Carnevale celebration. Hudson brought along a copy of the Cape Gazette for the occasion.
“I told him before I left, ‘I’m going to try to track you down, and I’m bringing the Cape Gazette and we are going to get a picture,’” said Hudson. “I’m a local, so I’ve always seen the older generation bringing their paper, and I thought it would be fun.”
Hudson explained how bringing a copy of the Cape Gazette along for the photo was a way to highlight the paper’s long-standing connection to the local community.
“I have been reading the Cape Gazette since I was younger, and it’s always been a big part of the community,” said Hudson. “I think it’s a great paper to see what the community is about, what’s happening in the community and what’s happening to friends or people you know.”
