Seahawks lax bounces back to pounce on Panthers 18-6
The Seahawks have officially taken flight after picking up their first girls’ lacrosse win of the season, an 18-6 triumph over a scrappy Polytech squad March 25.
Sussex Academy began its season with a loss to an impressive Sts. Peter and Paul team March 23, which may have delayed their takeoff, but proved to be a teaching moment.
“I was proud of them putting Monday behind us; Monday was a learning opportunity, and we talked to them about that,” coach Kevin Greene said. “They came back, had a great practice, and we understood what our strengths were, and that's what our focus is this year – playing to everyone's strengths. And I think this was just the start of it.”
Some of the usual suspects did their usual damage, senior Shea Danahy and junior Liz Layton in particular, but senior Ellie Merrick continued her ascent on the offensive end, and sophomore Reilly Mobilia proved she can play offense as well as defense from the midfield position.
“Everyone on that offense is a scoring threat, which I absolutely love,” Greene said. “The girls understand they could pass it to anyone, and anyone on this team will score.”
“We're just trying to get a sense of how we all play as a team, especially in the midfield, sensing out how our draws are working and the dynamic between me, Reilly and Ellie,” Danahy said. “It's getting stronger each and every practice that we have, and I think this game was a really great way that we could really sense that out for each other.”
The scoring margin allowed the Seahawks to empty their bench, but they’re going to need some of those younger girls to play anyway.
“Unfortunately, we had some injuries and a lot of illness passing throughout the team, so we've had to adjust our positions,” Merrick said. “It doesn't leave any middie subs, but we're here for it. That's our job.”
Sussex Academy is now 1-0 in the Henlopen Conference.
“It was good for us to get that win under our belt and build some confidence,” Merrick said. “Winning a conference game was really nice for us.”
The Seahawks will travel to Lake Forest to take on the Spartans at 4:30 p.m., Friday, March 27.
