Momentum from a 30-0 victory over First State Military Academy nearly carried Sussex Academy baseball to its first program win over Indian River, but the boys came up just short 13-9.
IR struck first in the bottom of the first, but the Seahawks tripled their output to take a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning. That’s when the hosts added four more runs. Sussex Academy responded with a run to keep things close at 5-4 before IR tacked on five runs in the third.
A scoreless fourth inning led to a bump in confidence for the Seahawks when the visitors trimmed the lead to 10-6 in the top of the fifth. Another IR run in the bottom of the stanza and one in the top of the sixth from Sussex Academy made it an 11-7 ball game. IR plated two more in the bottom of the sixth to set up a 13-7 seventh inning.
Sussex Academy showed some heart, but could only get two runners across, falling short of a comeback and moving to 1-1 on the season with a 13-9 loss.
