Cape sophomore Christian Cabello secured his first varsity victory April 14, with a 12-3 win over Indian River at Chris Short Field.
Cabello went four innings, not giving up an earned run. He also struck out four batters. The Vikings outhit IR 12-7.
Junior Emmett Wheatley led the Cape offense, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, scoring three runs and knocking in two RBIs.
Dom Mangini went 2-for-4 with a home run in the third. He also scored three runs. Joe Ruark was 1-for-2 with four RBIs.
“We were really happy with Christian on the mound,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “He keeps getting better and better each time out. He’s really starting to get confident in tough situations and starting to really compete.
“Offensively, we hit a lot of balls hard and made good things happen. We’re excited for how we are progressing and gaining confidence in the box.”
Cape travels to Sussex Central Thursday, April 16, to take on the Golden Knights at 4:15 p.m.

He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
