Sussex Academy seniors named Secretary of Education Scholars

Sussex Academy seniors Katya Geyer and Noah Benz were recently named Secretary of Education Scholars for their exemplary work ethic, dedication and accomplishments.
“We are incredibly proud of Katya and Noah for their many accomplishments in high school, and this recognition of their dedication and hard work is well deserved,” said Kyle Bentley, head of school. “We can’t wait to see what they achieve in the future.”
The state has named Secretary of Education Scholars every year since 1984, and the number of scholars from each school is based on enrollment. Students are chosen by the school administration for their academic records and community service.
Katya, the daughter of Olga Bakhar of Rehoboth Beach, said her mother always taught her that opportunities are like seeds. “They only grow if you tend them,” Katya said. “She showed me how effort quietly stacks up until something blooms. Because of her, I try to give my all in school, on the track and in everything I do, grateful for the chances I get and determined to make the most of them.”
Katya is a leader in academic research, athletics and community service. The state champion high jumper earned first-place awards at the Sussex County Science Fair and advanced in regional competition. She was also named a Summer Science Program International Chambers Scholar for her antibiotic resistance research.
Katya is a member of the Science National Honor Society and an Advanced Placement Scholar with over 300 volunteer hours supporting peer tutoring, environmental efforts and service organizations. She plans to pursue college studies focused on regenerative science, aiming for a career in neuroscience or immunology.
Noah, the son of Francoise and Nick Benz of Lewes, said his parents have been his greatest motivation in shaping him academically and personally.
“From a young age, they fostered my curiosity in science and math, encouraging me to ask questions and embrace challenges,” Noah said. “They pushed me to take advanced courses not just to succeed, but to discover what excites me. Their belief in my potential inspires me to aim higher. My soccer coach has also built my discipline and resilience, making me more competitive and driven in all I do.”
Noah helped relaunch the school’s Science Olympiad club, competed at the state level, and serves as treasurer of the Science National Honor Society while supporting tutoring and outreach initiatives.
An accomplished math competitor, Noah has placed high in regional Math League events. He is also a member of two state championship soccer teams and has earned DIAA Scholar-Athlete recognition. Noah’s academic excellence, leadership and service reflect his intellectual curiosity and commitment to his community. He plans to pursue postsecondary studies in a STEM field.
Katya and Noah were honored during an April 13 recognition event in Dover for all Secretary of Education Scholars.
