Children’s Beach House celebrates first year of after-school program
Representatives from Children’s Beach House and educators in Milton came together April 15 at Irish Eyes to celebrate one year of a collaborative after-school program and ponder the program’s future.
Terri Whitacre, after-school coordinator for Children's Beach House, said the goal of the program is to support children academically, socially and emotionally, allowing them to do homework, reading and club activities. Also included are arts and crafts, theater and music, games and showcases with a focus on social learning where kids are interacting with each other. The program is year-round and includes a five-week camp session in the summer.
Whitacre said the program started as a way to get students from Milton elementary schools – Milton Elementary and H.O. Brittingham – to take part in programs at Children’s Beach House, and the after-school program was an extension of that. At this point, there are 47 children between the two schools taking part in the after-school program with 30 signed up for summer camp.
