Kyle Wheatley succeeds RJ Dina, who remains as athletic director

After six incredible seasons leading Sussex Academy boys’ soccer, coach RJ Dina has stepped down as head coach and will be succeeded by longtime assistant coach Kyle Wheatley.

“We are excited that coach Kyle Wheatley will take over as head coach of the program,” Dina said.

A former collegiate-level player with worldwide playing experience, Wheatley has built a strong track record of success playing and coaching at the club and high school levels. He is deeply connected to growing the game locally and is prepared to lead by example, Dina said.

“His discipline, leadership and professionalism, shaped in part by his service in the United States Marine Corps, complement an already deep soccer acumen and passion for player development,” Dina said. “He is well-positioned to lead this program into its next chapter.”

Wheatley inherits a strong program. During Dina’s tenure, Sussex Academy has built one of the premier boys’ soccer programs in the state, highlighted by two state championships (2023, 2024), three state final appearances (2023-25), three conference championships (2023-25), three southern division titles (2023-25) and No. 23 national ranking in 2025, the highest in program history.

Dina’s overall record as coach is 73-27-3; his individual accolades include 2020 Small School Coach of the Year, 2023 State Coach of the Year and 2023 Region IV Coach of the Year. He has also helped develop elite talent, including three Delaware Top XI selections, one regional All-American and one national All-American.

Dina, who will continue in his role as Sussex Academy athletic director, said the program means more to him than he can fully put into words.

“Over the past six years, it’s been an honor to coach such an incredible group of young men and to be part of something that has grown into a true family,” Dina said. “The wins, championships and recognition are special, but it’s the relationships, the adversity we faced together, and the pride our players brought every single day that I’ll carry with me the most.

“Our success is a direct reflection of the commitment, resilience and character of our players, coaches and the families,” he continued. “Together, we built something special, rooted in accountability, brotherhood and a standard of excellence that I know will continue moving forward. I’m incredibly grateful for every moment and confident the program is in great hands with coach Wheatley leading the next chapter.”

Sussex Academy is a tuition-free, public charter K-12 school in Georgetown.
