An 11-6 loss to Archmere April 25 might be what the schedule reads, but the Sussex Academy girls’ lacrosse team knows it played a game much closer than that.
Five straight goals in the first quarter put the Auks up 5-0, but the Seahawks withstood the barrage and fired back in the second quarter.
Sophomore Reilly Mobilia opened the scoring for Sussex Academy with two quick goals. Senior Ellie Merrick notched a tally before Liz Layton pulled the Seahawks to 5-4.
Kacie Rawlings kept Sussex Academy in the game with seven stops, while Archmere’s Mia Luce insisted on keeping the Seahawks out of the game with eight saves of her own. Both girls made a few stops right at the doorstep.
Archmere managed to score twice before halftime, giving the visitors a 7-4 edge. The Auks opened the third quarter with three straight goals before Merrick’s strike gave her a brace. Trailing 10-5 to open the final 12 minutes, the Seahawks got a glimmer of hope when Layton scored the first goal of the fourth quarter. However, it would be the last goal Sussex Academy would score, as Archmere added one more to make it an 11-6 victory.
Merrick also had an assist to lead the Seahawks with three points. Sophomore Brooklyn Montgomery tallied a helper too.
The Seahawks will try to disrupt Indian River’s Senior Night when they head south to take on their rival Wednesday, April 29.
