Cape track wins Henlopen North Championship meet

The Cape boys’ and girls’ track teams won the newly created Henlopen Conference Northern Division Championship meet. The boys scored 152 points over 18 events to outpace Dover with 124.5, Smyrna with 109.5, Caesar Rodney with 108.5 and Sussex Tech with 85.5. 

The boys were powered by sweeping the top three places in the pole vault for 25 points and also winning the 4-by-800-meter relay in 8:18.

Cape’s stable of distance runners, with Jason Baker sitting out the meet to avoid overcompetition, amassed 49 points across the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. 

Brayden Redd won the 3,200 in 10:04. 

The Cape girls dominated with 183 points. They were followed by Smyrna with 93, Dover with 90.5 and Caesar Rodney with 90.   

Maile Godwin won the 800 in a personal-best time of 2:24. Harper Mamele jumped 5-feet-6-inches, and Natalie Horsey cleared 5-feet-2-inches to take the top two places in the high jump. Kaylin Wightman and Emery Resnick also took the top two spots in the pole vault, each clearing 7 feet. Mallory Kauffman won the shot put with a toss of 34-3 and the discus with a throw of 114-5. 

The Henlopen Conference Southern Division Championship meet was won by the Lake Forest girls with 146.5 over Sussex Academy with 144 and Laurel with 133.

Sussex Academy took three of the top four spots in the 800-meter run, with juniors Jaslene Brunskill and Riley Moriarty finishing 1-2 and sophomore Toluwani Ayodele taking fourth. Moriarty won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. Freshman Fernanda Mejia-Ortiz finished third in the 3,200. Junior Deenya Florestal earned a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Seahawks won the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800-meter relay races.

In the field events, senior Katya Geyer earned three second-place finishes in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Freshman Claire Denham took third in the pole vault. Junior Annabelle Hudson also earned a third-place finish in the shot put.

The Spartans also captured the boys’ meet with 181. They were followed by by Laurel with 158.5 and Sussex Academy with 133.

Sussex Academy senior Ryan Moody and sophomore Benjamin Moody finished second and third, respectively, in the 800. Ryan Moody won the 1,600 by four seconds, with Benjamin Moody finishing third and eighth-grader Seth Moore finishing fifth.

Benjamin Moody earned the win in the 3,200, topping Ryan Moody and Moore in second and third, respectively.

Senior Jesse Jean-Louis won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. The Seahawks’ 4-by-800-meter relay took first, while its 4-by-400 relay finished third.

Ninth-grader Zander Pine tied for first place in the pole vault.

Middle school wrap

The final dual meet of the season was held April 29 at Legends Stadium, as the Fred Thomas boys beat Georgetown 104-5 and the girls beat Georgetown 61-48. Fred Thomas also beat Sussex Central on the boys’ side 57-52 and on the girls’ side 84-25. The Beacon boys beat Seaford 77-32, while the girls easily beat Seaford 98-11.

Fred Thomas only won five events to Sussex Central’s eight, but it was the depth of Fred Thomas that pulled out the win.

Griffin Sender of Fred Thomas won the 400 meters in 58.0, while Duke Spath won the high jump in 5-4. Elijauh Whaley continued his fine season by winning the shot put in 38-4, while Niikai Jackson threw 118 feet to win the discus for Fred Thomas.

Fred Thomas girls won three field events with Arya Berry-Singh taking the long jump in 14-4, Harper Serman winning the triple jump in 28-6 and Rayne Revels winning the high jump in 4-0.

Highlighting the Beacon boys was Jace Reddix winning the 100 meters in 12.5 and returning to win the 400 meters in 59.3. Elijah Cain won the hurdles in 8.9 and came back to win the 800 run in 2:28 and the triple jump in 31-1. Christian Argueta won the shot put in 39-10 and the discus in 104-1.

Addison Wilson highlighted the Beacon girls with a win in the 100 meters in 12.9, the 200 meters in 27.1, a personal-best distance in the long jump of 16-7 and a triple-jump leap of 33-4. Clover Webb won the shot put in 25-9 and high jump in 4-0, while Mackenzie Swindell won the 55-meter hurdles in 10.5 and the discus in 51-7.

Mariner Middle competed at Selbyville April 29, but no results were posted. 

Beacon, Mariner and Fred Thomas will all compete at the Dover Invitational Saturday, May 2, to close out this season.
