Man, 35, charged with DUI after leading police on chase
A 35-year-old Rehoboth man faces DUI and other charges after he led police on a car chase before crashing.
Cornelius T. Marchtmon was driving north on Route 1 at 7:05 p.m. Aug. 25 when a trooper noticed his registration tags had expired, said Master Cpl. Gary Fournier of the Delaware State Police.
Marchtmon pulled over on Old Landing Road and spoke to the trooper who returned to his car to check Marchtmon's license, Fournier said.
Marchtmon sped away before the trooper was finished driving westbound on Old Landing Road and turned onto Airport Road. He did not stop at the intersection with Route 1 and he almost struck several vehicles when he entered the roadway and travelled southbound, Fournier said.
Marchtmon swerved through traffic before turning onto South Timberlake Drive where he struck a concrete ditch and a concrete pillar at Blue Point Villas condominium. He fled on foot and police caught him near Penco Corporation on Oyster House Road, Fournier said.
Marchtmon was taken to Beebe Medical Center where he was treated and released for injuries. He was charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest, disregarding a police officer’s signal, driving while suspended, aggressive driving, and several other traffic related charges. He was arraigned at Magistrate Court 2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $5,008 secured bail.
