Gallery 50 in Rehoboth Beach will host an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, for the last two exhibitions of 2012: Michael Krausz, A Retrospective, and New Small Works by Javier Brewster Brockmann.

“Michael Krausz is well known in the local arts community,” said Gallery 50 director Jay Pastore. “He and his wife, artist Constance Costigan, have been longtime Lewes residents. When Michael and I decided to do this retrospective, we searched through many of his works in his studio and arrived at what we think to be a cohesive collection. Michael’s paintings depict various spatial planes at once, embodying scripted messages of no literal significance. They are concerned with the emergence and dissolution of ciphers in infinite spaces, and embody a kind of automatic writing arising from conductorial gestures.”

Krausz, who is the Milton C. Nahm Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy and the founding conductor and artistic director of the Great Hall Chamber Orchestra at Bryn Mawr College, said, “I am interested in depicting limits of symbols by showing the relationship between language and the unsayable, symbols in the space of silence. My painting seeks to integrate my philosophical and musical concerns.”

Krausz's  works have been extensively reviewed. According to Edward Sozanski, art critic of the Philadelphia Inquirer, “Michael Krausz converts imaginative impulse expressed through magnificent technique into syncretic art of mysterious presence…The slight, unidirectional smearing of the characters emphasizes the artist’s concentration on achieving complete integration of mind and hand.”

The gallery will also be exhibiting five new small works by Javier Brewster Brockmann, an artist living in Puerto Vallarta. “Javier’s works bring alive the naturalism and primitivism of Mexico,” said Pastore. “The vivid colors of Mexican art, its traditions combined with deeply religious and archetypal influences, are reflected in his paintings.”

Both exhibitions continue through Monday, Nov. 5. A preview of each exhibition can be seen at www.50contemporaryart.com. The gallery is at 50 Wilmington Ave. in Rehoboth Beach and is open daily, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For more information, call 302-227-2050.
