The prime handicapped spots were gone an hour before the game on Feb. 15 at Sussex Tech as the twice-bitten, not shy Ravens and Cape Vikings basketball boys got set to battle for a one-game lead with one to go in the topsy-turvy Northern Division of the Henlopen Conference.
“We expect 1,200 for the game, then we’ll shut the doors,” said popular Ravens Assistant Principal Mike Furtch. “Fans have been buzzing about this all week.”
Cape, coming down the stretch of a crazy season, had given back two games apparently won, losing to Dover twice in overtime, while the Ravens lost to Cape and Smyrna in December and hadn’t lost a conference game since.
The game was a toss-up, a jump ball, and the winner would have the possession arrow Tuesday, Feb. 19. A win there means move on to the conference championship game on Saturday night at Smyrna versus Polytech.
Cape held the lead at the end of the first quarter and throughout the game, led by four players in double figures: Tyreik Burton 20, Jon Warren 18, Toney Floyd 13 and Gekwan Pritchett 11 to win going away 76-65. Cape also shot an impressive 18-22 from the free-throw line and got a strong inside game from the Sultan of Swat, Andrew Grau, who scored 8 big points and blocked 3 shots.
“I told our players at halftime, the team that keeps their composure will win the game," coach Steve Re said after the game. “We kept looking for each other and trusting, didn’t sink into any one-on-one stuff. I’d have to say that every kid who got into that game did his job.”
The Ravens were paced by dependable Kevin Larkin with 23 points, while Rae’Kwon Deshields had 18 and Dalton Foxwell with 12 also scored in double figures.
Cape broke open a close game in the fourth quarter on big baskets from Burton, Warren and Floyd to lead 67-51 with 3:50 left in the ballgame.
If Cape beats Milford at home Tuesday, Feb. 19, it wins the North. If Cape were to lose and Sussex Tech (hosting Smyrna) and Dover (at Central) win, there would be a three-team tie not solved by a head-to-head tiebreaker.
Milford lost by 30 to Central Feb. 15, 81-51, but croaked Dover by 35, 85-50 Jan. 8.
“You couldn’t ask for more than to play for a championship on your home court," Re said. "If we bring the energy we did tonight, we are a very good basketball team.”
