Rehoboth Concert Band to present Amazing Rhythm & Tranquility Nov. 22
The Rehoboth Concert Band will present a concert, Amazing Rhythm & Tranquility, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 22, at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach.
Now in its second season, the band has built a strong reputation for entertaining programs and excellent performance through its first concerts at Rehoboth Elementary School, the Lewes Summer Concert Series and the Rehoboth Bandstand. This holiday concert will draw selections from classical band literature, Broadway, pop and gospel music and a couple of novelty pieces just for fun.
The Rehoboth Concert Band is composed of an eclectic group of musicians with a variety of age, background and experience levels, from outstanding students to retired professionals. Under the expert direction of veteran band director Sharon Still, this group blends together to create quality music.
“Playing with Sharon Still as conductor is beyond any amateur musician’s wildest dreams,” says flutist Cindy Hall. “Sharon is an extraordinary leader who takes the time weekly to teach us all how to sound better as a group.”
As a retired public school band director with 35-plus years of experience, teaching is second nature to Still. She honed her conducting skills primarily in the Falls Church City School and the Prince William County School systems in Virginia. In addition, Still was band leader of a 10-piece big band in the D.C. area, conducted the Michigan Festival Concert Band for several summers and performed trombone with numerous community bands, symphonies, jazz bands, theater orchestras and brass choirs. Still retired to Rehoboth Beach in June 2012.
The program Still has chosen for the holiday concert includes the “First Suite in E Flat” by Gustav Holst, “Variations on Amazing Grace” by Gwyneth Walker, “Bugler’s Holiday” by Leroy Anderson, and a medley of Blues Brothers tunes arranged by Jay Bobcook. The band will also present the world debut performance of “Tranquility of Sea,” written by local composer Martin Staub.
The concert will also include a guest appearance of the acclaimed Bouffil Clarinet Trio. Trio members are Richard Foote, RCB clarinet section leader; Michelle Webb and Lisa Fatica. The Bouffil Clarinet Trio has performed throughout Delaware and Maryland.
Tickets cost $10 at the door, cash only. A portion of the concert proceeds will benefit the Cape Henlopen Senior Center. The Lutheran Church of Our Savior is at 20276 Bay Vista Road in Rehoboth Beach behind Big Fish Grill.
